Trip on Hwy 12 West2 July 26, 2013 - 44

I just came across the Sunday Stills challenge and thought I’d make my first contributions.

This is an older trestle bridge that I call “Span 27” based on what was scrawled on a rusty leg of the bridge in what looked like chalk. The Span 27 Bridge is a few miles outside Minot, North Dakota and extends over a gully through which an old highway (Hwy 12) now runs. I had no idea it existed. I was just out with my camera looking around. Honestly I wouldn’t have thought it was in much use given how rusted it was underneath, but during the three or so hours I was there two trains passed overhead.

The second train to come over the trestle bridge was just as much of a surprise, I hadn’t been there all that long and I wouldn’t have believed the bridge was so heavily used that I would see two trains on it within just a few hours.

This time I was in a better position to actually see and photograph the train. Since I am posting large images, I am doing them one at a time or in small groups.

The locomotive is a BNSF locomotive. BNSF is Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. BNSF operates the second largest freight network in North America. In November 2009, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. purchased all of the shares of the company it did not already own in a move that was widely seen as a show of confidence in the American economy following the 2008-2009 crash.

Train on Trestle Tower

The first train to come overhead was totally unexpected.  I was under the bridge when it happened. This is the best of the photos and it captures the bridge and the train in motion overheard in an unusual way.
