North Dakota is one of the U.S.’s leading exporters of agricultural products. Wheat and livestock top the state’s agricultural economy, but the state leads the nation in producing flaxseed, canola (my favorite because of its brilliant yellow fields), all dry edible beans, sunflowers, barley, oats and many other products.

As with other Great Plans and agricultural states, the increasing efficiency of product production has meant larger farms (or ranches depending on what you do and where you are located) with many fewer people required to perform farm work. This has often led to declines in rural communities as people leave the community and those who stay  have children who are unable to find jobs where they grew up.
